"New Providence Girls Basketball Beats Secaucus 55-32 In The NJSIAA Group 2 Championship Game."
Toms River North Highschool is hosting the 2023 NJSIAA Championship weekend round for girls basketball with the first game being New Providence and Secaucus. These two teams were evenly matched coming into the matchup with identical records pretty much. Secaucus sitting at 29-4 and Providence 28-3. Who will win the group 2 championship game and complete the goal.
New Providence got some shots off early, getting to the basket, making the three shots and playing good defense. They also forced some turnovers, took advantage of some. Then Secaucus started to make a run after calling a key timeout tying the game at 9-9 in the first quarter. Secaucus was able to hold New Providence to 10 points while scoring 14 heading into the second quarter.
Secaucus was struggling to find shots in the second quarter as New Providence switched it up with the defense and making better shots. This game was runs back and fourth as both teams trying to get momentum. New Providence held Secaucus to only 8 points while scoring 15 in the second quarter. Their defense stepped up big time in this quarter as they took a 25-22 lead heading into halftime.
The strong defense continued for New Providence in third quarter, still making good shots, getting to the basket, forcing turnovers and going to the free throw line. Secaucus couldn't answer against their defense as the offense was a struggle still to start second half. New Providence had success spreading the floor, finding teammates with good passing and flow to their offense against Secaucus. They gave up only 6 in the third while scoring 15 again extending the lead to 40-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
New Providence put the game away in the fourth quarter against Secaucus as the defense stepped up another notch. They forced tough baskets, only giving up 4 to Secaucus in this quarter. Providence scored 15 points in three straight quarters as the offense put on a show closing out the game in a big way. They ended up winning 55-32 to get the NJSIAA group two championship trophy over Secaucus.
Top scorers for New Providence were Grace Kinum 14 points, Meghan Lamanna 14 points and Grace Kelly with 8 points. They also had other contributions in this game making a total team effort.
Top scorers for Secaucus were Alyssa Craigwell 19 points, 5 rebounds and Daniella Peschetti 9 points 4 rebounds. Some positives for them but wasn't enough at the end.
